No Form? Big Questions
Produced by City Room on Thursday, September 13, 2007
Some political appointees in Illinois may have conflicts of interest no one knows about. The Better Government Association says it found more than 60 appointees who hadn't filed a required self-disclosure form. Dan Sprehe is the BGA's Chief Investigator.
SPREHE: These are important decisions about important state matters, and the people that are making them are required at least to disclose to the public whether they have an interest in state business and to disclose whether or not they could be personally benefiting.
Sprehe says the group found one board member who hadn't filed his disclosure form owned a majority share in a company with millions of dollars in government contracts. Sprehe says the law requiring disclosure isn't enforced. He says the Secretary of State and the Governor's offices each think the other is responsible for following up.
