Examining the Legal Issues Surrounding Patronage
Presented by the Better Government Association and the American Bar Association
On Friday, June 27, 2008 the Better Government Association (BGA) and the American Bar Association (ABA), Criminal Justice Section, White Collar Crime Committee will present moderated panel discussion on the legal issues surrounding patronage hiring. The event will last from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Harold Washington Library (400 S. State Street, Multi-purpose room A-B)
We hope that this event will be the first of many lectures as part of the BGA Ethics Series to promote discourse and debate on issues relating to government corruption, openness and accountability.

Thomas A. Durkin – Partner at Durkin & Roberts; defense attorney for Robert Sorich; former Assistant US Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois

Cliff Kelley – Host of “The Cliff Kelley Show” on WVON; former alderman
What impact does Robert Sorich’s mail fraud conviction have on political patronage? How should local governments handle the Shakman Decree in the future? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in the upcoming panel discussion.
