BGA to Honor “First Lady of the Press” Helen Thomas

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - The Better Government Association (BGA) announced today that Helen Thomas will be the keynote speaker at the organization’s Annual Awards Reception & Benefit on Wednesday, October 22 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Thomas is a trailblazer, breaking through barriers for women reporters while covering every President since John F. Kennedy. The former White House Bureau Chief is the author of five books, including, Watchdogs of Democracy? The Waning Washington Press Corps and How It Has Failed the Public.

The theme for the Benefit is “Watchdogs of Democracy” and the event will focus on the important role and responsibilities the press and organizations like the BGA have in serving the public.

Editorial cartoonist and Pulitzer finalist Chip Bok will be making a personal appearance at the Benefit to sign copies of his and Ms. Thomas’ recent book for children, The Great White House Breakout.

The BGA will also honor the recipient of the 2008 George Bliss Award for Excellence in Investigative Journalism. The Bliss Award recognizes the best in government-related investigative reporting from across the Midwest region, highlighting the impact of investigative reports as a reform tool within the context of state and local government waste, fraud and corruption.
