A key objective of the Better Government Association is promoting transparency and accountability in government throughout Illinois – and helping inform taxpayers about the public-sector institutions they fund. To that end, the BGA strives to make normally inaccessible – or decentralized – government documents easily available to the public.
Enter the "Illinois Schools Database," which showcases important documents from every public school district in Illinois. Those documents include employment contracts with administrators such as superintendents and principals; union contracts with teachers and others; budgets; payroll records; and various legal agreements.
The BGA obtained these documents – under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, which guarantees public access to public documents – from the elementary and high school districts.
All told, our database includes more than 6,500 documents representing tens of thousands of pages.
Beyond letting residents of a particular school district know the salaries and perks of administrators and teachers, this database allows anyone to compare financial and other information against other districts.
