Cook County Assessor Raises Big Money from Property Tax Firms

A BGA Investigation has found that attorneys doing regular business at Cook County Assessor James Houlihan's office account for more than 20% of his campaign warchest.

The BGA looked specifically at lawyers who have represented clients seeking a "Class 6B Incentive," a significant tax rate reduction for owners of industrial property.

Since 1999, Houlihan campaign committee has raised more than $3,430,033.80 in itemized contributions.  Of that, $751,925 (21.9%) was contributed by lawyers, firms, and partners of firms seeking 6B tax breaks for their clients.

In fact, records show that most attorneys doing successful 6B work are contributors to Houlihan's campaign.

Out of 215 applications for the incentive examined by the BGA, 145 (68%) list agents/attorneys who have donated to Citizens for James M. Houlihan
