BGA Board Names Daley, Hammock As Co-Chairs

Duo will work to advance nonprofit’s mission of ‘shining a light on government’.

The Better Government Association recently tapped two veteran members of its board of directors as co-chairs in charge of leading the nonprofit, nonpartisan government watchdog organization.

The BGA’s board of directors unanimously approved Margaret (Peggy) Daley and M. (Hill) Hammock to serve through the end of the year. They replace the late H. Roderic Heard, who was also a partner and trial lawyer at Barnes & Thornburg LLP. Mr. Heard died in March. The board appointments were approved unanimously at the BGA’s May 17 board meeting and went into effect immediately.

The two will work closely with BGA President & CEO Andy Shaw on development, strategy, finances and operations.

We are honored to have them as co-chairs and look forward to working with them as our organization expands the scope and impact of its mission to ‘shine a light on government and hold public officials accountable,' the board said in a statement.

Daley, who joined the BGA in 2003, is a managing director in the Chicago office of financial advisory and investment banking firm Duff & Phelps, LLC. Part of the firm’s Dispute and Legal Management Consulting group, she is also co-chair of the firm’s Forensic Technology & Analytics practice. She played a key role in the firm’s engagement as financial advisor to the Examiner in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy.

Daley has more than 20 years of experience in large-scale investigations, electronic discovery, dispute resolution and regulatory compliance. She specializes in high-profile international money laundering, financial fraud, asset search and due diligence investigations for multinational corporations in a variety of industries.

She received a J.D. in 1987 from Boston University School of Law, where she graduated Cum Laude. Daley, who is also involved in numerous civic and nonprofit activities, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1984 from the University of Michigan.

As BGA co-chair, Daley will oversee four board committees: Legal, Investigations, Policy and Communications.

Hammock, who joined the BGA in 2011, is the former vice chairman and chief operating officer of LaSalle Bank and former chief administrative officer of Chicago Public Schools. He is currently the chairman of the Chicago Deferred Exchange Company and serves on the boards of directors of Taylor Capital Group, Inc., and Verit Advisors.

During his tenure, LaSalle grew to be the 14th largest bank in the U.S. After retiring from LaSalle Bank, Hammock became chief administrative officer for Chicago Public Schools from 2007 to 2009. He oversaw all administration functions for the district and worked directly for Arne Duncan, before Duncan joined the Obama Administration as Secretary of Education.

As BGA co-chair, Hammock will oversee four committees: Development, Finance, Trusteeship and Investments.

Hammock also has extensive ties to the area’s leading civic and philanthropic organizations.
