BGA Web & Graphics Editor

The Better Government Association is seeking an energetic and creative full-time Web & Graphics Editor to lead our digital publishing and design efforts. The BGA’s mission is to promote transparency, efficiency, and accountability in government in Chicago and across the state of Illinois. For nearly 100 years, the BGA has vigorously investigated government waste and corruption, advocated for good-government reform, litigated to defend public access to information, and mobilized the public to achieve change. This position will be critical to communicate that mission. 

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Web & Graphics Editor is an integral member of the Civic Engagement team, charged with helping the BGA leverage the capabilities of community media and our resources to determining the best ways for us to deepen coverage of poor, underserved and typically minority neighborhoods. This position will create and design innovative graphic packages presenting the major investigations and policy pieces that will support efforts to raise the profile, reach and impact of local voices.

This position involves the development of high-level creative concepts for design projects and will work closely with the Investigative and Policy teams to conceptualize ideas, build and lay out stories with words, images and photos, unique illustrations and data visualizations innovatively and consistently. This role will be responsible for adapting the organization’s website based on revolving content, maintaining the backend, leveraging the dynamic power of our database for graphic storytelling, and will have the autonomy to design attractive packages that will build and generate support for BGA’s mission and values. 

The ideal candidate is a hybrid journalist + digital/designer who understands storytelling, is passionate about in-depth investigative reporting, and sees it as his or her mission to work collaboratively with excellent reporters, policy analysts and other colleagues to create powerful layouts and visuals that increase the impact of text-based work and to unleash the power of raw data. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, manage and publish in Drupal CMS for the various investigative stories and policy recommendations using a content management system; proofread and edit page content including page design layout. 

  • Ability to produce inviting, beautiful, user-friendly, dynamic content with the utmost attention to detail and speed/efficiency. 

  • Work closely with the various teams to conceptualize and visually produce journalism packages, issue explainers, policy analysis, columns and standard news items.  

  • Proactively provide artistic input and design for our civic engagement, marketing and development efforts, as needed. 

  • Function as a project liaison for special story projects, interfacing with vendors, freelancers, etc. 

  • Collaborate as a strategic partner with the Leadership team to refit the website and lead the move to a new CMS in 2021.

  • Track analytics, measure progress against goals, provide suggestions, strategic solutions, and produce regular reports. 

  • Stay current on new and emerging trends and provide suggestions for improving platforms and functionality. 

Requirements

  • BA, preferred. 

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in web editing, story illustration, and publishing.

  • Familiarity with and ability to custom-build attractive, highly functional web packages for content. 

  • Familiarity with Drupal is plus, but not mandatory if you are a quick study with significant time working with other CMS/design languages (Tarbell, etc.). 

  • Highly proficient in web-based publishing and design technologies. 

  • Experience/knowledge in webpage design, web programming techniques and protocols. 

  • Excellent design skills proven through a portfolio submission. 

  • Writing and editing and skills – you will catch mistakes and pay attention to the words and accuracy of the content. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively online and offline.

  • Ability to solve problems creatively and independently.  

  • Passion to advance the organization’s mission and vision, and interest in and basic knowledge of state and local Illinois government.
