Community Engagement & Partnerships Specialist

We’re searching for a motivated, collaborative person to join the Better Government Association’s audience engagement team as our Community Engagement & Partnerships Specialist. This role is a combination of community-builder, event coordinator and project manager – supporting the BGA’s Pulitzer Prize winning newsroom and our agenda setting policy shop.

This person is the BGA’s lead in connecting with local media and civic organizations, actively obtaining community input and building relationships with community stakeholders - community partners, newsrooms, media colleagues and civic organizations. This person will work to expand, diversify and deepen our audience, build authentic connections and enhance the impact of our work.

The Community Engagement & Partnerships Specialist will be a part of the BGA’s audience engagement team to amplify the work of the BGA’s investigations and policy teams and enhance the impact of the BGA overall.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Cultivate and develop relationships with community partners, newsrooms, media colleagues and policy organizations within Illinois' diverse communities to advance the BGA’s commitment to increasing authentic connections to these areas and ensuring their stories, concerns, challenges, voices and views have an impact on governmental decisions.
  • Build relationships with newsrooms, reporters, residents and community members from diverse communities to inform and mobilize residents to hold government accountable.
  • Deepen the BGA’s civic engagement impact in under-resourced neighborhoods by developing a strategy to elevate marginalized voices, including people of color, disenfranchised communities, immigrants, women and youth.
  • Forge collaborations between BGA staff and residents that identify community problems and explore solutions in government matters.
  • Plan and execute events and training sessions in collaboration with news, policy, and development teams.
  • Represent the BGA at local events and community functions.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated commitment to the BGA mission to bridge the gap between people and their government by raising awareness of issues and encouraging public action.
  • At least two years of experience working in a nonprofit newsroom, with some of it explicitly serving a local audience.
  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement and outreach. Local knowledge and experience in Chicago and other Illinois communities is a plus.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple projects, build community, and innovate in form and function.
  • Success in meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Self-starter capable of working at a fast pace, independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong writing, editing and interpersonal skills.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

We are looking for talented, high-potential colleagues who can contribute to the success of this enterprise, and such candidates who may not meet all the listed job requirements are invited to apply. The salary range is $55,000 - $65,000. The position also includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; a comprehensive paid time off package; and a 401(k) with an employer match.
