Enterprise Reporter & Podcast Coordinator

The BGA is looking for an enterprise reporter and podcast coordinator that will focus on state or city government, developing quick-turn investigative and analysis pieces that break news about the performance and failings of Chicago and Illinois government. The Enterprise Reporter will focus on developing sources who can help us document hidden agendas and inequitable or unexpected outcomes of government actions, stay ahead of corruption investigations and expose conflicts of interest, waste, fraud and abuse.  This role will also focus on developing podcast ideas and coordinating production of a BGA podcast.

A 2022 Pulitzer Prize winner, the Better Government Association’s mission is to achieve transparency, equity and accountability in government — for everyone. For almost 100 years, the BGA has vigorously pursued its mission by producing investigative journalism, advocating for good-government reform, litigating to defend public access to information, and mobilizing the public to achieve change. We are looking for a veteran journalist to serve as its first in-depth solutions reporter, as part of the Illinois Solutions Partnership, an ambitious collaboration between the BGA and Robert R. McCormick Foundation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Respond to major news developments in focus area with an investigative intent, developing exclusive and compelling findings that drive public discussion and may lead to reform or change

  • Use deep sourcing, documents and data analysis to uncover revelatory details that contribute toward compelling and consequential story lines 

  • Publish stories with urgency and efficiency and follow up with energy and tenacity

  • Coordínate podcast production with fellow staff members, our media partners and national Podcast producers. Serve as the in-house expert on podcast opportunities and execution. 

  • Contribute to production of interactive and graphic elements

  • Collaborate with colleagues and media partners with mutual respect and an eye toward professional development

  • Promote BGA journalism through social media and audience engagement 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent life experience in journalism

  • Demonstrated success in investigative or enterprise reporting, exposing corruption or systemic problems in government

  • Previous experience in podcasting

  • Knowledge and keen interest in state and local government and politics

  • Excellent writing skills and commitment to accuracy and detail

  • A proven track record of collaborative work 

  • Demonstrated proficiency with data analysis and multimedia storytelling

  • Strong communication and organizational skills
