Institutional Giving Manager

The BGA’s mission is to promote transparency, efficiency, and accountability in government in Chicago and across the state of Illinois. For nearly 100 years, the BGA has vigorously investigated government waste and corruption, advocated for good-government reform, litigated to defend public access to information and mobilized the public to achieve change.

The BGA’s three core functions take a comprehensive and complementary approach: our investigative journalists identify problems; our advocacy team works to fix them through reform; and our civic engagement efforts: inform and empower the public—particularly communities that are disproportionately impacted by failures of government. Independently but collaboratively, the three areas work toward one goal: to reduce governmental waste, inefficiency and corruption and the secrecy that allows them to flourish.

Critical to the BGA’s success is a strong fundraising program. Currently, the BGA raises $4.5m annually from individuals, its annual luncheon, and foundations. In 2022, The Robert R. McCormick Foundation pledged up to $10 million over five years to execute a path-breaking strategy that will add reporters, form reporting partnerships that will build investigative expertise, and launch an ambitious civic outreach effort. This transformational gift has made generated much excitement. While McCormick Foundation support has made a significant impact, fully executing this plan requires an increased focus on securing additional philanthropic support.

To this end, the BGA seeks an Institutional Giving Manager to serve as a key member of the institutional giving team, raising funds from foundations in support of the BGA’s newsroom, policy team, community outreach activities, media initiatives, and special projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, develop, and implement strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of current and prospective institutional donors to achieve revenue goals of $1M – $1.5M annually.

  • Manage a personal portfolio of key foundations, helping to initiate and steward these relationships, and serve as first point of contact.

  • Research new prospective foundation donors and funding opportunities.

  • Write high-level foundation and government grant applications and reports.

  • Maintain internal grant proposal and report calendar and revenue tracking in Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge database.

  • Work closely with the BGA’s leadership team to gather and verify information for proposals, applications, and reports.

  • Generate and regularly update program budgets, financial reports, statistical information, and supplemental materials for proposals and reports.

  • Record and process grants received, prepare routing forms for development

and finance, draft and mail acknowledgment letters.

  • Develop and maintain crediting for institutional supporters including donor-

specified language for printed and online materials.

  • Perform other special projects as requested by the Director of Development

  • Prepare invitation lists for events and stewardship activities; participate in

special events as needed.

  • A commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment is required.

  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS 

The candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years development experience, preferably in institutional giving, with full knowledge of foundation solicitation and stewardship processes. The candidate will have a proven track record of initiating and maintaining effective relationships with donors, strong writing and organizational skills with experience writing and editing high level proposals and grant applications, and the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects within a fast-paced work environment. Good computer skills, including Word and Excel, Google and experience with a fundraising database (Raiser’s Edge is preferred) are essential. Experience at a non-profit news organization or knowledge of journalistic and policy practices. Ability to occasionally work evenings or weekends to attend cultivation events as needed. 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

Salary will vary depending on the candidate and will range between $65,000 - $75,000, based on experience and skills. The position also includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; a comprehensive paid time off package; and 401(k).
