During a Smart Streamlining Idea Forum held on May 20, 2014, in Springfield, the policy unit of the Better Government Association provides a closer look at the 7,000 units of government in Illinois–by far, the most of any state in the nation. The presentation features a breakdown of the more than 3,000 special units of government in the state, the nearly $1 billion in district-level administration costs spent by the state’s school districts, some attempts to trim government costs and what steps can be taken in the future to provide more efficient government through consolidation and collaboration.
