In a Feb. 5 letter to members of the Chicago City Council, BGA Policy Coordinator Judy Stevens urged aldermen to pass a proposed ordinance to expand jurisdiction of the city’s inspector general to include the City Council.

The ordinance passed a council committee unanimously last month, and enjoyed the support of over two-thirds of aldermen before a final vote on it was delayed by a procedural maneuver. In the weeks following that deferral, an effort has been underway to persuade aldermen to amend the ordinance in ways the BGA policy unit believes would fundamentally undercut the effort.

The BGA commends the aldermen who have worked for years on this reform measure, and strongly opposes any attempts to weaken the ordinance.
